Understand what you are installing
An Expert Advisor is software that runs inside the desktop MetaTrader terminal. Depending on its design and permissions, it can analyze data, manage positions and send trade orders. Read the documentation and obtain the file from a source you trust.
An MT5 EA normally uses a compiled .ex5 file. An MT4 .ex4 file is not interchangeable. Check your terminal version, operating environment, license conditions and supported account types.
Install in the correct data folder
In MetaTrader 5, choose File → Open Data Folder. Place the EA in MQL5 → Experts, following the developer’s folder instructions. Refresh Expert Advisors in the Navigator or restart the terminal.
Open the documented symbol and timeframe, then attach the EA from the Navigator. Review every input before accepting it. Never enable DLL imports or external network access unless you understand why the software needs them.
Check permissions on a demo account
Start with a demo account. Confirm terminal-level algorithmic trading permissions and the EA’s own trading permissions. Check the Experts and Journal tabs for startup errors and permission warnings.
Validate broker-specific symbol names, volume steps and stop distances. Confirm whether trading sessions refer to broker-server time. A VPS may keep the terminal available, but it does not remove operational or market risk.
Monitor the first forward test
Compare actual behavior with the documented rules. Note reconnections, rejected orders and unexpected changes to exposure. Keep a copy of the exact input settings and the EA version used.
